Jesus said, "Strive first for
the kingdom of God
and his righteousness,
and all these things will be
given to you as well."
-Matthew 6:33
Food, clothing, shelter. The basic necessities of life. We work hard to get them, so they consume much of our time and attention. To meet the basic needs you work, perhaps so does your spouse. It may be an eight-hour day, but it consumes far more time and energy.
Many people let work become the fulcrum of their lives. They let themselves become overwhelmed by the responsibilities. They keep trying to work up and up for more prestige and bigger paychecks. The job becomes the most important part of their lives, to the detriment of family, friends, and faith.
Today Jesus shakes up our priorities. One thing is worthy of our yearning, our seeking. That's God's work. Participating in God's reign on earth. God's righteous way of living. God's relationship with you. When that's well established, everything else falls into proper perspective.
