The Rev. Frank C. Spencer

The Reverend Frank Clark Spencer is named for his maternal grandfather, the Reverend Frank E. Clark. His paternal grandfather, Reid Spencer, was a banker. Theology and finance have combined in Frank to create a unique perspective on faith, leadership, entrepreneurship and organization. Since taking his first Executive Director position at age 32, Frank has led four non-profit and four profit seeking organizations.

After earning a BA at UNC-CH where he was a Morehead Scholar and an MBA at Harvard Business School where he was named a Baker Scholar, Frank had a distinguished career in real estate which included taking his company public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2005. He was named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for the Southeastern Region in 2009. Frank retired from his company in October 2010 and entered Union Presbyterian Seminary. In May of 2012 he accepted a call to be President of Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte while continuing his seminary studies.

Following a unanimous vote by the 221st General Assembly, Frank became President of the Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church (USA) on July 1, 2014. He has led a complete restructuring of the Benefits Plan which has dramatically increased flexibility, reigned in costs and resulted in a 25% increase in active plan membership.

He was ordained as a Minister of Word and Sacrament in February of 2015. Frank has served the Presbyterian Church (USA) as a deacon, ruling elder, Chairman and interim President of the Montreat Conference Center, and on the NEXT Church national strategy team.

His first book, The Benefit of the Doubt: Claiming Faith in an Uncertain World, was published in 2013. Recent publications include the foreword to Gradye Parson’s latest book, Our Connectional Church and co-authoring of Cultivated Ministry, A field guide to bearing fruit.
