Emily M. Brown
Denomination: United Church of Christ (UCC)
Organization: Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York, NY
Emily M. Brown graduated from Union Theological Seminary with a Masters of Divinity in May, 2010. She served Broadway United Church of Christ for three years, most recently as Pastoral Associate, and served Judson Memorial Church for one year as a Community Minister. She is currently serving as Acting Associate Pastor of Broadway United Church of Christ in New York.
Emily grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts. She attended Harvard University, where she studied religion, focusing on Christianity in America. Emily eventually answered the call to ministry she had first heard in her teens. This led her to Union, where she studied pastoral ministry and theology, excelling in preaching and biblical languages. She also tutored at a Harlem Children's Zone youth center.
Emily was awarded the 2010 David H. C. Read Memorial Preacher/Scholar Award, a national award given to a student who demonstrates distinction in preaching and biblical scholarship and is committed to pulpit ministry. The award enabled Emily and her husband to travel to Israel this May. She also received the Kneeland award, Union Theological Seminary's preaching award. Emily preaches regularly at churches around New York, and is committed, as Reinhold Niebuhr once said, to preaching "with the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other."
Emily loves singing in choirs, baking, and listening to audiobooks. She and her husband live in Tribeca.
