The Rev. John R. Gunn: Minister - Columnist - Author

Denomination: Other

The 20th Century produced many outstanding writers. One whose literary accomplishment stands as a living monument is the pastor, newspaper columnist and author, John R. Gunn (1877-1956). On a wide variety of subjects he left us an abundance of messages that warm the soul and touch the heart.

For over 36 years Rev. Gunn wrote a daily column about forming ideals, facing up to life's challenges, building a strong faith, facing tragedy, rendering wise judgment, enriching friendships, seeking forgiveness, repairing a broken heart, loneliness, and just about every other condition in which the human spirit finds itself. Countless readers have expressed how much his practical advice meant to them. His column, entitled "A Short Sermon for Today," demonstrated Dr. Gunn's unique talent to interpret Christian thought in a condensed fashion and in a way that attracted people of different faiths.

This web site offers in convenient form some of the thousands of messages originally published in newspapers, books, and over the radio. Rev. Gunn said, "throughout these thirty-six years I have sought through my daily writings to point out God's answer to human needs as revealed in the Bible.... It is my hope and prayer that He whom they seek to honor will use them in a wide sphere."

Little did John R. Gunn know that the audience for his writing would be expanded through so many different media! First the Fort Wayne (IN) Journal-Gazette continued to reprint his columns daily for 15 years beyond his passing; then over 2,000 radio stations carried his messages daily for 10 years; today his work is available for scholars at the Union Theological Library (New York, NY), the American Baptist Historical Society (Atlanta, GA) and for the general public around the world on the web. Were John R. Gunn in our presence today, we believe that he would say to you, his readers, "God bless you, my friend!"

John R. Gunn studied at Mercer University (Macon, GA) and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Louisville, KY). He served churches in Atlanta, Madison, Nashville, New York and Fort Wayne. Dr. Gunn authored eight books, including "At Jesus' Feet", "One Hundred Three Minute Sermons", "A Lamp Unto My Feet", "Snapshots From the Bible", "Facing Life", "The Battle of Christendom", and "Bulwark Never Failing". His last book, "Good Morning, Lord--Devotions on the Hope of Glory", was published posthumously in 1977.

A remarkable editorial by Frank Roberts appeared in the Fort Wayne (IN) Journal-Gazette following Dr. Gunn's death. "For more than 36 years, he daily brought inspiration and light to the readers of the Journal-Gazette with his 'short sermon for today,' a column unique in the history of American journalism.... he was a master of English prose, a thorough scholar whose Bible was his chief delight and the source of his wisdom."

Christmas Spirit All Year

Monday October 24, 2011
In this episode of Be Still and Know, The Rev. Gunn states, "The Christmas light is the true spirit of Christmas - the remembrance that Christ came into the world on this day for us and for all men. We need this idea in our hearts throughout the year; not just once a year on Christmas Day."

Sincere Good Manners

Thursday October 20, 2011
The Rev. John R. Gunn asks, "What are the qualities which do most to sweeten life? Surely we would name good nature, sincerity, generosity, a sense of humor and good manners. God's Guidance

Monday October 17, 2011
The Rev John R. Gunn writes, "God has given each one of us a heart, which can pick up the beam of His guidance, if we keep tuned to Him. Marriage the Divine Ideal

Thursday October 13, 2011

Sacrificial Love

Monday October 10, 2011

Gunn in this episode of Be Still and Know.

Value of Music

Thursday October 06, 2011
A psychiatrist in a state hospital once said, "We have found that appropriate music not only tends to tranquilize the unsettled emotions of the mental patient, but it arouses his interest as nothing else will." The Rev. John R. Gunn replies, "The power of music to turn psychological confusion into order is not a new discovery. We find an ancient instance of its use in the scripture when David came with his harp to play for King Saul - to relieve his mental depression and restore his distracted mind to its normal state."

Democracy

Monday October 03, 2011
In a letter addressed to the Christian Jews in Asia minor, the apostle Peter wrote, 'Honor all men; love the brotherhood.' "In these two brief sentences", notes author John R. Business of Life

Monday September 26, 2011
In this episode of Be Still and Know, The Rev. John R. Gunn writes that, "Greater than all other enterprises is the business of life. Thursday September 22, 2011
In this episode of Be Still and Know, The Rev. John R. Sit Still Awhile

Monday September 19, 2011
In this episode of Be Still and Know, the Rev. Gunn says "All activity is not achievement; all motion is not progress - sit still awhile. Learn to take things more calmly and you will soon find yourself working more efficiently and effectively."

Whither Bound?

Thursday September 15, 2011
In this episode of Be Still and Know, The Rev. John R. Gunn asks, "Where are you bound? Do you know? Do you sail without compass or chart? You carry precious cargo - do you know to what port? Are you just drifting, leaving the winds and tides to take you where they will?"

Delight of Discovery

Monday September 05, 2011

Demon of Noonday

Thursday September 01, 2011
The Rev. John R. Gunn comments, "Life's noonday is the most perilous period of life, as the story is intended to show. The demon of noonday - his name is legion, animalism, materialism, cynicism, pessimism. How furiously these demons sometimes attack men and women in the midday of life."

Thanksgiving

Monday August 29, 2011
The Rev. John R. Gunn writes, "Thanksgiving, the giving of thanks, still comes at that time of the year when the harvest is gathered. It still is a good time of the year to say 'thank you' to God. The right time when everyone is slowing down to the twilight winter days."

Arrival of a Thinker

Thursday August 25, 2011
The Rev. John R. Gunn writes, "The arrival of a thinker is not always welcome by the world. Comfortable and complacent people do not usually like to be disturbed by a thinker and they are usually quick to offer opposition to new ideas."

Finding Your Way

Monday August 22, 2011
The Rev. John R. Gunn writes, "Whatever may be the difficulty you face, the same difficulty has been faced by others. Good Strong Conscience

Thursday August 18, 2011
If you have a conscience in good workig order, you should thank whoever brought you up. Are you responsible for the rearing of a child now? Then here is a great opportunity for you; an opportunity to build a conscience so that one day, the child will not have to stop and ponder about what to do and what not to do. He'll know the difference between right and wrong. And if you have done your job well, the child will be grateful to you for the conscience you have helped him develop.

Love

Monday August 15, 2011
The Rev. John R Gunn writes, "We all wish for love -- the non-physical kind. We want someone to care about what happens to us. Love emanates from a person as a glow from a light hidden inside the body. It's this love that creates a home out of a wooden or a brick structure."

Judging Other People

Thursday August 11, 2011
How do you judge other people? - I mean, in particular those you don't know very well. How do you suppose other people judge you? In the same way? Using these same methods you do? What are some of these methods? Well, for instance, how you look or how you act or what you say or who your friends are.

Giving Thanks

Monday August 08, 2011
If a blessing is not said in your home, it may be that a simple request will let you begin the custom. And it is a habit; not something that is begun by two days or three days, but by a week or two weeks of saying it daily. The more you ask the blessing, the more it becomes a habit and the easier it is to continue. And the more you ask it, the more pleasure it becomes to you.

Mountain Top Experiences

Thursday August 04, 2011
Every Christian knows what it is to have the mountaintop experiences. What blessed moments are these in the Christian life, but it is not for us to build tabernacles here and be at ease. At the base of the mount lies the valley summoning us back to toil and trial.

Replace Hate with Love

Monday August 01, 2011
Nothing is more blinding than the dark passion of hate. Hate sometimes leads to acts of violence and often to murder. The apostle John wrote further, 'Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer.' The act of murder is an act of hate and the man who hates his brother has the seed of murder already in his heart.

Patience

Thursday July 28, 2011
The Rev. John R. Gunn writes, "We magnify genius, but too often we forget that the chief ingredient of genius is patience... No matter what other qualities a man may possess, no matter how well equipped in brain and brawn, if he lacks patience, he will never win any great success."

Size of a Man's Thinking

Monday July 25, 2011
If you know the size of a man's thinking, you know his measure. Small thinking means small men. It takes big thinking to produce big men. 'As a man thinketh, so is he' - Solomon was speaking of man's moral life when he said that, but the principle applies in other directions. What a man thinks determines not only the measure of his moral life, but the measure of his achievements.

Life's Burdens

Thursday July 21, 2011
There are times when we wish we could get away from our cares and problems and certainly an occasional vacation from our routine duties is essential to renew, strengthen, refresh us. But we find true rest only in the place of duty, never by fleeing from it.

Nature of Death

Monday July 18, 2011
The Rev. John R. Gunn writes, "Even the shadow of death has its Sun; therefore, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. The Bible's Comfort

Thursday July 14, 2011
The Rev. John R. Gunn writes, "A large part of my work as a pastor has been that of ministering comfort to troubled and sorrowing hearts. In this ministry, I have relied wholly on the Bible. Without that blessed book, I would be at a loss as a comforter."

Think Heavenward

Monday July 11, 2011
Man is divinely endowed with the capacity for a higher level of thinking than that of the brutish man and the fool. We sin against our better selves when we neglect to cultivate and develop this capacity.

Theatrical Religion

Thursday July 07, 2011
According to The Rev. John R. Gunn, "In religious circles, there are many who play the role of saint without an element of saintliness in their characters. It is this theatrical religion that Jesus condemns - a religion which manifests itself only in religious pretensions, religious regalia and religious ceremonies."

Sentiment is Power

Monday July 04, 2011
The Rev. John R. Gunn writes, "We should feel sorry for those who have no sentiment in their nature. How do such people get any pleasure; any thrill out of life? They must be a misery to themselves. Certainly they do not make happy companions, for without sentiment the heart becomes cold and hard. Sentiment is a necessary thing - it is the poetry that mingles with the prose of everyday life."

Plain Hard Work

Thursday June 30, 2011
"Many a brilliantly endowed man has been surpassed by the man of plodding industry", writes The Rev. John R. Gunn. He continues, "The greatest of men have been the least believers in the power of genius. They have been men of toil and perserverance."

Apron Strings

Monday June 27, 2011
Frequently I have heard it said of some boy, 'he is tied to his mother's apron strings.' Sometimes this is said in ridicule of a boy, yet had you thought that it might also be a high commendation? Thursday June 16, 2011
In this episode of Be Still and Know on the topic of temptation, The Rev. John R. Gunn writes, "There is an ignorance which is desirable - the ignorance of vice. We do not need to know the ways of vice in order to avoid them. All we need is to know the safe path and to keep to it."

Life's Conflicts and Struggles

Thursday June 09, 2011
In this episode of Be Still and Know, The Rev. John R. Gunn speaks to the significance of life's conflicts and struggles. We sometimes complain of these things when really they are the making of us. If we had no trials or hardships, if we lived always at ease and in comfort, we would never develop into strong men and women and we would never know the meaning of a vigorous and victorious life.

Humility

Monday June 06, 2011
Before the time of Christ, the word humility was a word of contempt. To call a man humble was to characterize him as cowardly and weak. But when Christ came, He took this hated word and made it one of the most honorable in our language. The Rev. John R. Gunn writes, "One cannot pay a man a greater tribute today than to say that he possesses the grace of humility."

Physical Afflicition

Thursday May 26, 2011

Don't be a Meddler

Monday May 23, 2011

Survival of Christ's Words

Thursday May 05, 2011
"The money miser never knows when he has enough, no matter how much he accumulates, he always wants more", says The Rev. John R. Gunn. "Every one knows a man like this. He started out with the ambition to accumulate a modest fortune - just enough to make himself comfortable and safe against the rainy day, say, twenty-five thousand dollars. He was a hard worker and shrewd in business and it required only a few years to achieve his goal, but was he satisfied? Far from it."

Life out of Death

Monday May 02, 2011
You do not like to think of death, do you? You'd like to put it out of your mind. Often the very thought of it startles you, yet the Bible never speaks of death as startling. God of Speed

Thursday April 28, 2011
In this episode of Be Still and Know, The Rev. John Gunn talks about our fast-paced lives. "In both work and play, speed seems to be the outstanding characteristic of American life. Model Christians?

Monday April 25, 2011

Do you have a problem? Who doesn't these days. 'If it isn't one problem, it's another' we say. That's part of living; human nature. The Rev. John R Gunn says in these times we should turn to prayer in this Episode of Be Still and Know.

Honesty

Thursday April 14, 2011
"Honesty is the best policy for everyone," writes The Rev. John Gunn. "It is better to be honest, even if no one but ourselves know it. It is a good way to stay feeling clean."

True Self

Monday April 11, 2011
Who are you?; what are you?; of what account are you in the midst of all this vast creation? This is a momentous question; one that men have been asking all through the ages. For how can you be fully alive if you do not know what your life means?

What Is He Worth

Thursday April 07, 2011
"Certainly, we should not decry men of wealth," writes The Rev. John Gunn. "Many of our money kings have been men of kingly character and have administered their wealth for the common good, but the mere fact that a man has accumulated a pile of money, does not afford a true rating of his worth."

Warm Handclasp

Monday April 04, 2011
Have you ever been to a palmist to have your hands read? The palmist professes to read your character and even to foretell your future by a study of your hands. Author John R. Gunn writes, "I have no faith in the methods and claims of the palmist, but there is something in the hand and the touch that helps to reveal one's character. Almost instinctively you judge a man's disposition by the way he shakes hands with you."
