Chris Henry: A Joyful Obligation
Tuesday October 01, 2019
The Rev. Chris Henry says that in Luke 17 Jesus tells an odd parable to his disciples who have just begged him to increase their faith in light of all he has been teaching about living as a follower of his. What Jesus calls them, and us as Christians, to do can seem overwhelming, but Jesus encourages us that we already have enough faith to live out the challenging commands he's given us.
Chris Henry: Faith in a Seed
Tuesday June 12, 2018
The Rev. Chris Henry says that these two parables about seeds in Mark 4 are perhaps not so much a description of what God does to us, but of what we are called to do for God. He encourages us to think of ourselves not as the soil, but as the sower--maybe we are the ones to whom these precious mustard seeds have been entrusted--we are to be active planters of the kingdom of God.
Chris Henry: The Problem with Piety
Tuesday October 18, 2016
The Rev. Chris Henry says Jesus’ parable in Luke 18 is as current as the latest political attack ad or hateful Facebook post, because it captures the heart of the tragic human instinct to lift oneself up by tearing others down. The proud Pharisee thanks God that he is not like those people, while the tax collector begs God for mercy. And Jesus is clear about who goes home justified.
